A comedy by Eric "Rising Damp". Chappell.
The challenge of portraying two very different couples in the same play was what drew North Shore actors Max and Sue Golding to "We're Strangers Here" which they will perform at the Stables Theatre during September. The play is by top British comedy writer Eric Chappell, who is perhaps best known for his classic TV series "Rising Damp". "We're Strangers Here" later became a hit TV series called "Duty Free".
"We're Strangers Here" is set in a Spanish Hotel in the 1960's. It follows the chance meeting of two very different British couples on holiday by the sea. Linda and Robert's relationship is jaded. He's a successful businessman, distrustful of "foreigners"; she wants more than money and is searching for romance and/or the meaning of life. David has been made redundant and is splashing some cash on an escapist dream. His relationship with mistrusting Amy has become dispiriting. Linda and David meet. A flirtation, suspicion, accusation, revenge, conflict and comedy ensue.
The Goldings play both couples. "It's a mixture of huge fun and hard work bringing to life a period where the world was changing too fast for some people and not fast enough for others" they say.
