Keynote

Sir Ray Avery – Founder & CEO, Medicine Mondiale

Sir Ray Avery is a successful businessman, scientist, inventor and social entrepreneur. Ray's ground breaking work in the developing world has brought him respect and recognition internationally.

Some of his achievements include the development of a low cost infant incubator designed for use in the developing world, the design of Intraocular Lens Laboratories in Nepal and Eritrea making modern cataract surgery available to the poor, the invention of the Acuset IV Flow Controller which was a finalist in the 2008, Saatchi & Saatchi World Changing Ideas Award, and Proteinforte a revolutionary treatment for Protein Energy Malnutrition.

His work has been recognised by his peers and he has received numerous awards as well as the New Zealand Order of Merit Knight of the Grand Companion in the New Year Honours for services to philanthropy. He was also voted Most Trusted New Zealander in the Reader's Digest annual survey.

Tenby Powell - Chairman, Advaro Finance

Tenby has held several senior management positions and formed Hunter Powell Investment Partners in 1999. Tenby is now the Chairman of Advaro Financial Services and Yoogo Fleet Leasing, Chairman of Waikato Link Ltd, Director of Antarctica New Zealand, Chairman of Aldera Ltd and Director of Angel Link. Tenby is also Founder the New Zealand SME Business Network, now with over 7,500 members, dedicated to raising the optic of the importance of our small business ecosystem. As a consequence of this pro bono work, he was appointed Convenor of the Government's Small Business Development Group, a position he has held since 2012 advising Minister and Officials on policy that affects SMEs.

Mai Chen - Managing Partner, Chen Palmer Public and Employment Law Specialists

Mai Chen is a thought leader, a direction setter and a futures thinker. She is one of NZ’s top constitutional and administrative law experts, specialising in central and local Government policy and legislation.

Mai is the inaugural Chair of NZ Global Women, including NZ’s top 200 women leaders; she also founded and is the inaugural Chair of NZ Asian Leaders. Mai has completed the Superdiversity Stocktake: Implications for Business, Government and New Zealand, forthcoming on 3 November 2015, to be published on the Superdiversity Centre for Law, Policy and Business Website. Chen Palmer and the Superdiversity Centre have recently entered into a joint venture to form Cultural Bridge to advise government and companies on how to communicate with diverse New Zealanders.

Nigel Morrison - CEO SKYCITY

Appointed a Director of SKYCITY in December 2008 Nigel Morrison joined SKYCITY as Managing Director and Chief Executive in 2008 having had over 18 years experience in the gaming industry throughout Australasia and Asia.

Prior to SKYCITY, Nigel was the Group Chief Financial Officer of Galaxy Entertainment Group, a leading publicly-listed Hong Kong-based group operating and developing casinos in Macau. He has also held positions as CEO of the Federal Group, Australia’s largest private gaming group and Chief Operating Officer of Crown Limited. Before embarking on a career in casinos in 1993, Nigel was a Corporate Finance Partner with Ernst & Young in Melbourne, specialising in the gaming industry. In 2009, Nigel was awarded professional accountancy organisation CPA Australia’s highest acknowledgment for career achievement.

Greg Doone - Digital Strategy and Data Leader, PwC

Greg has an unwavering enthusiasm for driving businesses improvements through digital. Working with boards, CEOs, CIOs, and marketing directors, Greg spends most of his time helping to transform organisations to be more digital and data-centric.

Greg is focussed on digital strategy and has racked up over 18 years of experience in the field, with a strong history of delivering successful change across markets in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. His experience spans digital strategy, omni-channel customer relationship management, social media, e-commerce, and the traditional web. He is currently overseeing several such programmes for some of New Zealand’s largest and most ambitious businesses.

Fran O'Sullivan - Editorial Director Business, NZME

Fran O'Sullivan has written a weekly column for the Business Herald since its inception in April 1997. In her early journalistic career she was a political journalist in Wellington and subsequently an investigative journalist who broke many major business stories including the first articles that led to the Winebox Inquiry in both NBR and the Sydney Morning Herald.

She has specific expertise in relation to China where she has been a frequent visitor since the late 1990s. She is a former Editor of the National Business Review; has twice been awarded Qantas Journalist of the Year and is a multiple winner of the Westpac Financial Journalism Supreme Award
